Displacement 2017
‘Displacement’ is a commissioned work for Bradford Peace Museum to commemorate 70 years since the Independence of India in 1947 which at the time caused catastrophic civil war. Millions of refugees and ordinary peoples lives were torn apart and the piece aimed to provide a platform for some of these voices to be heard.
Having documented stories from some of the elderly Indian and Pakistani diaspora in England these fragments of memories were written onto fabric scrolls cut from garments that were originally made in this part of the world. A marked contrast exists between the beauty of the fabric scrolls and the harrowing stories within. These colourful scrolls are loaded into and framed by a pre-partition Indian shaped map cavity.
